Getting known...
You've got your band, but it's hard getting known. Here are some helpful ideas to make you famous!
Building up a fan-base can be difficult, so it's a good idea to start by being a support act for an already established band. This way, you'll get a lot of experience and have a chance to appeal to some of their fans. Being a support act is a good way to get known, as you have a definate audience.
Start gigging asap. Doing charity gigs is a good way to get free write-ups (advertising!) in papers, so consider doing a few early on. You can also get an agent, who will get you gigs and take a cut. See our agencies list.
Now you've got you've fans, you need to keep them! Getting a website is a good way to keep them up-to-date, let them listen to your latest music and tell them where you're gigging next. We recommend www.wazok.co.uk for good quality websites at low prices!
Send some demo CDs or even your website address (if it has music/video clips) to targeted record companies. You'll also need to make a press-pack, which will include photos of the band, biogs, any reviews of past gigs - send this off to the record companies too.
Encourage word of mouth - it's usually the best way of getting known. Also, when people contact you about the band, keep a database of their phone numbers, names, etc. This will be useful when you come to organising gigs and advertising, as you already have a group of people who might be interested.
Get reviewed in music papers and on music websites (like this one!) To get on this site, go to the Reviews section and send one in. We try to publish as many as we can.
You can also get your band website linked to this site - go to the Band Sites page to find out more.
